Using the Right Word: counsel, council, consul

As a noun, counsel means "advice" or "legal or professional adviser"; as a verb, counsel means "to advise." Council refers to a group that governs, administers, or advises. A consul is a government official appointed to a position in a foreign country.

The consul appointed to Brazil counseled the trade minister there about our new tariff laws.
The corporate counsel knew the pollution laws by heart.
The building council offers counsel to dissatisfied tenants.
