Writing News Releases

News releases are useful when you want to publicize accomplishments of your company or its employees. Sometimes you might also have to issue releases about bad news. Your goal then is first to be completely honest and second to place the situation in the best possible light, including any hope for future changes. Use news releases for the following topics.

  • New products or services. These might include any mergers, acquisitions, expansions, or changes.
    They could also deal with any product recalls or losses, discontinuations, or price increases.

  • Personnel Issues. Promotions, awards, and new hires or management changes are all causes for a positive news release. A bad news release might include replacements or layoffs, deaths, or response to negative accusations.

  • Events. Send news releases about grand openings, sales events, grants or contracts, and any charity or benevolent activities. Other announcements might include accidents or plant closings or relocations. You might also use a news release to respond to legal actions or problems.

  • Policy. Publicize new or changed policies such as waste-disposal practices, public access to facilities, and customer return or exchange policies.

To gain a reader’s attention, try to find an interesting or unusual angle for your story. Whether you are writing releases giving good news or bad, your goal is to place your company in the best possible light, emphasizing the positive and neutralizing the negative.
